Barcelona 2016: Thinking, Feeling, Playing…
From Italian design to playful Spain! Next, we arrived in Barcelona, a city that combines beautiful design, sun, sea, and sand!
This year’s theme was deliberately targeted towards gamification as part of the design process challenging the conventional norms of business of the dull, boring and stale organisation reality.
We had great pre-conference classes from past and present board members as well as other experts in our field around design thinking, doing design as well as performance and digital. There was the return of Keynote speaking to our conference agenda in recognition that our community is diverse with different needs. Some need Open Space others prefer traditional. Subjects ranged from the challenges of hierarchy and moving away from risk-averse OD issues from Dr. Noami Stanford, to Game thinking and design from Jeroen Van Mastrigt. We also heard from academics on Complexity Science (Dr Jose Navarro) as well as an Anthropologist (Pablo Herreros) on the implications to Organisation Design issues, Pablo is sadly no longer with us, but his words and impact live long in our memories. Our final keynote was a playful and passionate talk from the Spanish illustrator Pedrita Parker on how she created her brand.
As usual, we held our Open Space events where much rich and diverse content challenged us to think about Organisation Design for the now as well as the future. During these periods we had games to play to challenge our physical being as well as our minds!
The end of the conference there was a treasure hunt around the park in the beautiful Spanish sunshine as well as a brilliant music event and plenty Spanish beer as well as some flag waving from a USA ODF Board member!

Next on our tour would be Dortmund, our first time back in Germany since our inaugural conference just a few years ago, but by now felt like a lifetime ago!
